Hello everyone! I'm back from the Easter break and found this little gem in my email. It outlines how to play BlueRay and HD DVD in Ubuntu Linux.
In a nutshell it covers the need for mplayer and ffmpeg as well as DumpHD and the required hardware. I've not tried this yet (I don't have an HD DVD player). I looked at the HD DVD player recommended for this and yikes! The price is $219 CAN. A bit beyond my budget unfortunately. However, that aside, the post is really great!
Hope you enjoy it: RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD

One more quick post for the Easter holiday (here in Canada). I've started getting that annoying
"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
error message again, and was looking for a quick fix (as I'd been logging into terminal each time to fix it without rebooting). To my surprise, the issue was way easier to fix than expected! All you’ll need to do is Read more

I received an email earlier today that there was a flavour of Ubuntu Linux that I did not list in an earlier post: "Ubuntu Based Linux, 32 Flavours and Then Some…". The derivative is called PC/OS. So with excitement, I took a quick peak at the site here: "Welcome to PC/OS". Given it's a holiday weekend, this post will be short but, here's what they have to say about themselves... Read more

“Windows tax?” I Don’t Think So…

Here's the scenario, a friend of mine just bought a new laptop. When he was buying it, he indicated that he did not want windows on it (which should make it cheaper). The response from the vendor: "We can't do that, it comes with Windows". When he became a bit more aggressive, they indicated they could give him one without Windows (Vista SP1), but it would cost an extra $70!
Okay, let's pause here for a minute I need to rant. :) I use Windows on one of my (old) computers whenever I need a copy of it running. My initial experience (and certifications) were on Windows platforms. While for all intents and purposes, I've pretty much migrated to Linux, I still think I'm open minded enough to stand back and form an objective opinion.
In my opinion, the above scenario is nothing more than Read more

Ubuntu Based Linux, 32 Flavours and Then Some…

I had an inspiring thought this morning! (Trust me... this is a rare event! Ha ha ha...) :) It occurred to me how vibrant a number of Ubuntu Linux flavours there must be. I've often been asked which is the best one to use, and responded based on my immediate quick thoughts. However, I've never actually sat down and written out something helpful to new (or existing) Linux users, listing them so they could follow-up at leisure, later. Maybe I should have written this when the blog originally launched? Either way, inspiration hits at the oddest times, during this video for example: Read more
