VMwareOver the week I received a couple messages asking about VMware installations. While I'm sure there are all sorts of tutorials about this, I thought (since I received questions) that a quick "How to" guide would be helpful to some of you.

What is VMware? It's a virtual environment that lets you install "guest" operating systems. Such as Windows, BSD, other Linux distributions, etc.

Why would you want to use VMware? To facilitate an endless number of OS environments without having to repartition your hard drive. In my case, it allows me to keep my "good installation" (the one I use day-to-day) from my play area where I experiment. For people who want or require a Windows environment, this would be a great solution!

Prior to installing VMware, we need to ensure a few things.

  1. This quick guide is for Ubuntu Linux 7.10 (Gutsy).
  2. Patch Ubuntu Linux 7.10, if you're using source to install (because the first time I did this it failed, and I Googled to find that we had to Read more

Earlier this month I posted about the lack of a simple network management interface for Ubuntu Linux, where I suggested Ubuntu Needs to Improve the Network Management GUI! At that time several readers sent input and others provided helpful comments. Among them was Wicd. Well.. I've finally installed it. Wow, was I missing out on a good suggestion. I feel like such a goof for not installing it sooner. :)

For those not familiar:

"...Wicd is an open source wired and wireless network manager for Linux which aims to provide a simple interface to connect to networks with a wide variety of settings...", as stated in their sourceforge profile.

Among some of the features I think especially nice are Read more

Quick post!... For those who have not heard yet:

"...The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 6.10 will reach end of life on Friday April 25th, 2008. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 6.10..."

The above was recently announced here: 'End of Life' announcement for Ubuntu 6.10

If you've not done so yet, it may be a good idea to upgrade your Ubuntu Linux version. Not sure how to do that? There's a handy guide here: Upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10

Easy as pie!

Earlier last week I was reading some posts in a web hosting forum "Site Backup - Virtual Private Servers (VPS)", within the post a forum member was trying to facilitate an automated backup system for his important files. In this case they were web based files.

YAFC - FTPThere were some excellent solutions presented, such as Rsync, etc. But I thought that sometimes all we need is a small fix. It left me wondering how well known "Yet Another FTP Client" (Yafc) is? (There are quite a few, but this is one I found on Sourceforge (I think in 2005). It's a very handy, small client. From their Sourceforge profile:

"...Yafc is yet another FTP client which features a directory cache, remote filename completion, Read more

Last month we posted "Top 100 of the Best (Useful) OpenSource Applications", which listed some really good open source applications. One of the things missing was a good OpenSource, Flash content creation tool.

It seems there's a new application in town! On March 25, 2008 the "Salasaga" site announced a snapshot release of their developing (it's still in Alpha) , "Integrated Development Environment for producing eLearning". As mentioned, Salasaga is still in Alpha, so it's not ready for a production environment. However it's really worth a good look. It's available from their download page (which also indicates that this may be a cross platform application - Linux, BSD, Solaris, Windows).

From their site, here is some of what they have to say: Read more
