I received an email earlier today that there was a flavour of Ubuntu Linux that I did not list in an earlier post: “Ubuntu Based Linux, 32 Flavours and Then Some…“. The derivative is called PC/OS. So with excitement, I took a quick peak at the site here: “Welcome to PC/OS“. Given it’s a holiday weekend, this post will be short but, here’s what they have to say about themselves…
“So whats unique regarding PC/OS. Its the first Linux based distribution that provides ease of use out of the box. It provides all multimedia codecs out of the box, an easy to use and simplified interface. Great compatibility with older hardware to help you extend your hardware and software investments. Being based on Ubuntu Linux all software and hardware that is compatible with Ubuntu is compatible with PC/OS. Our mission statement is simple…” (The rest of the description is on their site).
After looking through the pages, I thought it’s worthwhile checking out, so I’ve a copy of the iso to use later. The developer keeps his blog here: PC/OS Developer Blog and they’ve started a “How To” section as well.
It’s the Easter holiday (here in Canada), I’m going back to enjoy it, but just wanted to send out this quick news flash.
I’d be interested if anyone has input on this? Also, has anyone tried it?

That´s a great tip for beginners, as installing codecs is quite difficult if you´re starting in linux from windows.

Thanks for the tip.
@olga9999 - Hey!
I’m glad it was helpful. If you get the chance to install or use it, we would love to hear your input about it. “Pretty please.”
(But only if you get the chance).
I have downloaded and tried this distribution. It is quite nice and it has a plethora of applications that Ubuntu and Xubuntu don’t include.I love the Usplash, its simple. Its a very simple system and I like the simplicity of it.The only thing I dont like is the ‘Be’ look, the XFWM theme is based off of BeOS and he uses the Echo theme which is kind of Be-ish but its XFCE so it has a lot of themes and icons and wallpapers that you can change. My wife loves it. She actually said it was the first distro of Linux that she can use that doesnt feel alien to her. It didnt hurt that everything from Flash and all kinds of video worked for her out of box. It is the first version and I look forward to what this distribution brings to the game. But as for dumbing down Linux for the desktop user its extremely good. I sent the developer an e-mail about a problem that I had with my video card in a laptop and he stayed with me until we fixed it unlike some other distros where you send them an e-mail and its ignored.
@MikeV - “…first distro of Linux that she can use that doesn’t feel alien..”, really? WOW!! Now I’ve really got to find some time and take a more serious look at PC/OS. I found the support issue of interest as well. I wonder how many users there currently are? Would be nice to watch how a new distro starts and grows to full maturity.
Thanks for following up on this, muchly appreciated! Cheers!
