Linux in 30 Days

Some time ago, one of our readers (Jon Donovan) suggested a blog in which visitors could take a 30 challenge and post their thoughts, comments, observations and so on, about various Linux distributions. As a result, a "child site" was born! LinuxIn30Days.com

We've since started fielding requests from other readers, that in many respects mirror the purpose of "Linux in 30 Day". For those interested, please take a look at the new blog, and if you'd be kind enough, please do provide input!

While the focus was originally geared towards the new Linux user, I thought it would be more effective to have ANY user provide input about different Linux installs. I also think a new design may be more effective? (What do you think?) - Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy when you want to contribute to this blog, however know there are two options:

1) Work with Ubuntu Linux Help (Read: Help - Assistance Requested - Please).

2) Join in at Linux in 30 Days.

We've had some great people provide assistance already, such As Vadim Peretokin, Jon Donovan and Vadim Kurland. We've also had countless comments, mostly high quality ones that really were helpful and very educational! Personally, I've been surprised at what I've learned - simply from well directed comments by users who are well versed in Linux or who have found solutions I could not easily find.

There actually was a time where I considered giving up this blog as it's been difficult to provide time to it (and other projects). However it seems from many of the comments sent directly to me, that it is an appreciated and valued resource for other users and new Linux users. Granted, that the focus is on the Debian based Ubuntu distribution, I've also read that non-Ubuntu users have also found it useful - And for that matter some Windows users have also expressed interest (which surprised me).

Above all, the offer still stands, anyone who wants to help out (and get valuable back links), now there are two options. As with any endeavour, I'm always open to ideas or collaborative projects. If you're interested in any of the above or have any questions, simply comment below or contact me.

Cheers!

@ChandiPreetham D – I took a quick look and it appears that the developers failed to support Linux? (At least I couldn’t see support for it). Because the developer does not appear to support Linux, I then headed over to WINE and found this: http://appdb.winehq.org/appvie.....AppId=4071 Seems that the game rating is listed as “Garbage” on the WINE site. Also, some install instructions are here: http://appdb.winehq.org/object.....p;iId=6224 – However some users have indicated that the game does not run after a successful install.

Side note: Have you checked out our earlier posts about gaming?

when ever i login to my laptop which got ubuntu in it, i can see a red alert on the up right corner.when i move the cursor to it i can see the message as “(An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was:’Error:Opening the cache(E:Malformed line 49 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list(URI parse),E:The list of sources could not be read.)’This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies”.

After clicking on that red alert i can see update manager opened but even that it is stating as “Could not initialize the package information” a problem occurred..

could you please help me in resolving this.thanks in advance

@preethamkate – What version of Ubuntu are you using? 8.04 (LTS) or some other version?

**MAKE SURE you have a backup of ALL VALUABLE DATA that you WANT TO KEEP, BEFORE trying to fix this issue.**

Have you tried to resolve unmet dependencies using the following command in terminal?

    apt-get -f install

The above command will “force” install (or it at least that’s what I understand) missing dependencies.

FYI, more apt-get commands are here: http://www.debian.org/doc/manu.....ex.en.html and aptitude here: http://algebraicthunk.net/~dbu.....de/doc/en/

When my old Dell XP laptop crashed under the weight of my families accumulated viruses I figured I’d take a chance on Ubuntu. It worked perfectly the first time. It found and connected to the DSL and printer, came with all the software I needed and no crippled demos. I’m sold.
